Instagram rolled out a major algorithm update in April 2026. The results are split down the middle.
Original creators. People filming their own content, sharing their own ideas. They are seeing reach increase by 40 to 60 percent. Accounts that repost other people's content are down 60 to 80 percent. Some aggregator pages went from 2 million views per post to 200,000 overnight.
This is not a bad update. But you need to know what changed, what to do, and what to stop doing.
“This is not a bad update. It is the best algorithm Instagram has ever had for original creators.”
What Changed
The Scoring System
Instagram changed how it scores engagement. The old system treated all interactions roughly the same. The new system has a points based hierarchy:
| Interaction | Points | Change |
|---|---|---|
| Like | 0.5 | Down from 1 |
| Comment | 5 | Up from 3 |
| Reply to a comment | 10 | New |
| Save | Strongest signal | Weighted higher |
| Share | Strongest signal | Weighted higher |
What this means. 100 likes with zero comments is now worth less than 10 comments with replies. If you have been building content designed to get likes, you have been optimising for the wrong metric.
The Audition System
Every post you publish now goes through an audition. Instagram shows it to a small group of people who do not follow you. If they engage quickly, by replying, saving, or sharing, your reach expands. If they scroll past, your reach gets throttled before it even hits your own followers.
The first 30 minutes after you post now decide everything.
Original Content Priority
Instagram is actively pushing original content and punishing reposts. If you post 10 or more reposts inside a 30 day window, you are removed from recommendations entirely. Watermarked TikTok reposts are ranked down.
Original creators are up 40 to 60 percent. Aggregator accounts are down 60 to 80 percent. Instagram made its position clear.
Account Level Authority
Consistency is now weighted at the account level. Posting regularly and maintaining engagement over time builds authority. One viral post will not save an account that has been dormant.
What to Do
Make Original Content
Film it yourself. Share your own ideas. Write your own captions. This is the single biggest factor in the new algorithm. Original content is being rewarded more than at any point in Instagram's history.
Force a Reply
End every post with a question that forces a reply. Not “what do you think”. Ask something specific. “Which one would you pick?” or “Have you tried this?” A reply to a comment is worth 10 points. A like is worth 0.5. Design your content to start conversations, not collect thumbs up.
Make It Save Worthy
Saves are one of the strongest signals in the new algorithm. Content that gets saved tells Instagram this post has long term value. Steps. Frameworks. Lists. Checklists. Templates. Data. The things people want to come back to.
Reply to Your Own Comments
Every reply you leave on your own post is worth 10 points to the algorithm. This is free reach. If someone comments, reply. If nobody comments yet, start the conversation yourself.
Post When Your Audience Is Awake
The audition window is short. You need strong early engagement. Check your Instagram Insights to see when your followers are most active and post during those windows.
What to Stop Doing
Stop Reposting Watermarked TikToks
Instagram is ranking down watermarked content from other platforms. If you want to cross post a TikTok to Instagram, export it again without the watermark or film it natively.
Stop Posting Other People's Content
10 or more reposts inside a 30 day window. Removed from recommendations entirely. Aggregator accounts are being punished across the board. If your strategy relies on reposting, it is over.
Stop Chasing Likes
Likes are now the weakest engagement signal on the platform. A like is worth 0.5 points. A comment is worth 5. A reply is worth 10. Redesign your content to generate comments and replies, not likes.
Stop Posting Inconsistently
Account level authority is now a factor. Posting once a week and disappearing for two weeks hurts you more than it used to. Build a consistent cadence and stick to it.
“If you create original content and build real conversations, this is the best algorithm Instagram has ever had for you.”
The Bottom Line
This algorithm update rewards people who create original content and build real conversations with their audience. It punishes people who repost, chase likes, and post inconsistently.
If you are reading this and you create your own content, this is good news. Instagram is finally rewarding the work.
